Heavenly Father, Reading Your Word is to read Your commands. You question our decisions and demand action when You say that GOD PRESIDES OVER HEAVEN’S COURT; HE PRONOUNCES JUDGMENT ON THE HEAVENLY BEINGS. But we have chosen sin over righteousness. We have chosen the temporary over the eternal. We have chosen the easy way rather than the longer, harder permanent way. We have chosen our own way, rather than to learn each specific lesson that You would have us learn.
We are guilty when we hear You ask: “HOW LONG WILL YOU HAND DOWN UNJUST DECISIONS BY FAVORING THE WICKED? GIVE JUSTICE TO THE POOR AND THE ORPHAN; UPHOLD THE RIGHTS OF THE OPPRESSED AND THE DESTITUTE. RESCUE THE POOR AND HELPLESS; DELIVER THEM FROM THE GRASP OF EVIL PEOPLE.” Psalms 82:1-4 (NLT)
We whine when we hear this command to action—it’s hard, I don’t want to; someone might get mad at me; I might get rejected. However, You command us to strive to give justice to the poor, the orphans, the helpless. In order to deliver the poor from the grasp of evil people, that requires challenging not just evil people, but evil itself. Evil exists in this world and has trapped billions of people into a wrong belief system, a system of “works” where the believer works to obtain a reward, perhaps eternal life. But that belief system is wrong, must be challenged and rejected and can be overcome only by a relationship with You.
We confess our unwillingness to listen to You, to learn from You and to live by Your explicit commands. Please forgive these poor choices and strengthen us with Your love, compassion and an honest Christ-like attitude that truly rejects evil and brings dignity to those You love who are poor, oppressed and destitute. In Jesus’ Name ~ Amen
